The Becontree estate
|
Interesting, I expect there's got to be a fair few residents or ex residents on here? Produced many famous! Any good stories, how has it changed since the resident WWI hero's it was built for?

Also you had Terry Venables and our very own Ken Brown living in Baron Road Martin Peters opposite Parsloes Park Sandy Shaw Kenny Ball to name a few from the area.
We lived in Winterbourne Road right next to Goodmayes Park so was always playing Football or Cricket over there...Loved my childhood.

The Boundry estate in Bethnal Green openened in 1900 is one of the oldest built on the natorious site of 'The old Nichol' . I think the Becontree estate was once reputed to be the largest housing estate.

Spent many a happy day at my nans who lived at 123 Marlborough Rd next to a banjo.
After nan died the house went to a lady that my mum knew but tragically they built a small fish pond in the garden and the toddler drowned in it.
This would have been late 70’s.

It was hardly Hollywood boulevard but I do remember seeing quasi the programme seller from time to time, usually in the mornings, and he was kind of famous if you remember the 80s.

I don't think that article is correct about it being the first council estate. This in East Acton is older and has that claim. But not much of a connection to West Ham

Alf Ramsey was from Dagenham but I don't think his house was part of the estate?

I'm from sarf of the water so unfamiliar, but know an estate or two, and I thought Downham estate was huge? Intrigued as this was the first ever built and amazing history. There must be a few tales over the decades.

First house I lived in was Becontree, we moved out around 10 years old. Loads of great memories as a kid. I'm not famous or a war hero, but I have (so far) survived the Shanghai lockdown of '22. Does that count for anything?
